Jes returned from her late Monday afternoon lunch to a scene of fire trucks and ambulances blocking the entrance into the thirty-six-story building. Thankfully, she thought, we have underground parking. She reached the twenty-sixth floor to see that the commotion that caused spectators to form originated from her floor.
As she further investigated,
she found that there was a host of medical personnel gathering in a
corner office. "Whose office is that," she spoke aloud to herself? Jes
began to investigate further, but her ringing phone abruptly put an end
to her brief investigative career.
"Maguire and Associates, this is Jessica Lewis, how can I help you?"
Jes said while peeking over her desk for a better view of the scene.
"Ma'am, I am not Mr. Edgewater's secretary," Jes said with irritation in
her voice due to saying Marvin's name.
"Ma'am, all I can do is transfer
you to his extension because there is a situation going on right now. If
that is good enough for you, I can do that. However, if it's not, then I
don't know what to tell you."
Jes began to sense that the woman on the phone was not going to get
off the line unless she had spoken to Marvin.
"Ma'am," Jes became sympathetic,
"I will try and locate Mr. Edgewater
for you. Who may I say is calling? Mrs. Edgewater, he's married?"
Jes
questioned. "Oh, his mother,"
Jes said surprisingly. "Well I'll see if I can
find him," she said dryly as she placed the call on hold.
Jes thought, as she walked to Marvin's office to deliver the message,
that she should let Marvin's mother know what kind of son she really
has. She thought that a mother should know everything about their
children, and Jes was sure that Marvin's mother didn't know that her
lovely son was a rapist. Yeah she thought, I should tell her.
Jes reached Marvin's office to see that all the commotion that was
being caused was coming from his office. She walked closer to see that
Marvin was laying on a gurney with oxygen being administered to him.
With his eyes closed, she didn't know if he was unconscious, or if he was
resting, but she didn't care. Jes walked back to the phone prepared to
tell Marvin's mother that her son just had a run in with karma, but her
heart wouldn't allow her to be as cruel as her mind insisted. Instead,
she composed herself, released the call from the hold position, and
delivered the bad news.
"Hello ma'am," Jes said slowly and respectfully,
"Unfortunately I have
bad news for you. At this time, a medical team is treating Mr.
Edgewater. I don't know what happened to him, but I'm sure someone
from the hospital will give you a call. Again ma'am, I don't know the
details of the situation," Jes explained as Mrs. Edgewater tried to get as
much information as possible about her son's condition.
"I'm sure they
will call you ma'am. Just in case they can't locate your number, why
don't you give it to me," Jes suggested easing Mrs. Edgewater's concern.
"Yes ma'am I will give them the number," Jes said as she wrote the
number down, then recited it back to Mrs. Edgewater.
"As soon as they
come out, I will give it to them," Jes told her as she hung up the phone.
