"Yes, yes, yes I will take the offer! I will take the offer!" Gwen said
with melodrama.
"I see that you have gotten to the urgent document in you pile of legal
briefs,"
Mr. Cochran said.
"Yes I have, and I will take it,"
Gwen said sternly.
"Hold on champ,"
Mr. Cochran called all his top attorneys' champ.
"This is a greater responsibility. Have you looked over your new job
description?"
"No, I haven't looked over it completely, but I have been working for
an opportunity like this since I became an attorney."
"I can appreciate your diligence, but this new job is more than you
have done before."
"Then why offer the position if you don't feel as though I can do it?"
"What a minute,"
Mr. Cochran said in a definite tone.
"I know that
you can do it, I just want you to look over the contract and make sure
that you can agree to the conditions of the contract. You will no longer
be dealing with trial cases. You will now be dealing with all of the
commercial accounts. This will mean more training, more personal time
that you will have to invest. I want you to make sure that you can
commit to that."
Gwen sat and thought about what she had just taken in, and decided
to look over the contract and make a decision later. Though she knew
that the end result would be Cochran Mathews and Associates.
"I understand,"
Gwen began.
"I guess this is not the time to stop
being an attorney right?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well I question everything else I do in court and I haven't questioned
the contract once."
"Champ, take your time, it's a big move. I know you can do the job, I
just want you to make sure that you can do the job as well as take upon
the responsibility of having your name atop of this building with mine."
"Mr. Cochran thank you for the opportunity, and I will look over the
contract tonight and let you know in the morning what I have decided."
"Take your time, the offer isn't going to anyone else."
"Thank you."
Gwen started for her office when she heard Mr. Cochran call her
name.
"Ms. Mathews, take the rest of the day off, you've earned it."
"Thank you Mr. Cochran, I appreciate that."
Gwen walked back to her office to gather her things. She began
packing her leather briefcase with all of the legal briefs that she would
need for the rest of the night. She reached for the contract that had
given her the rest of the day off, and held it for a moment.
"This can change the rest of my life, or if I'm not careful it could ruin
the rest of my life,"
Gwen said to herself.
